What is self care?
Self care is the act of making the conscience time to preserve or improve your mental and physical wellbeing.
In short, self care is making the time and effort to take care of yourself in all aspects. It’s not a new concept however, recently it has become a focal point for a lot of people. With people’s lives becoming busier, juggling work with family and trying to do and be everything for everyone. Self care has taken a dip and now you are becoming more mindful of your own personal well being and trying to bring that into focus on a more regular basis.

What actions make up self care?
There are so many different definitions of what constitutes self care. But, to put it plainly it is anything that you are doing to help your mental or physical needs. So, as everyone is different, self care can vary significantly from one person to another.
For some, it could be as simple as putting down their anti slip bath mat and taking a long relax in the bath with a face and hair mask on. For others it could be going for a haircut, taking a walk, applying your favourite brand of makeup and making yourself food good within your own skin.
Self care can also be promoted and practised in ways maybe a little deeper than the physical needs such as focusing on our soul, mind and spiritual needs. These can be promoted by doing things like yoga, meditation, seeking help like therapy, spiritual practise and anything we feel can help us feel cared for. Some people seek help through tarot cards and crystals too. There really are so many ways for each individual! Our food and drink intake can also be part of self care.
Why is self care so important?
Making time for self care is as important as your daily necessities such as food and water. It adds into the mix to keep you healthy and happy, so plays a crucial role in you taking control of your own personal health.
Although, it can seem like a daunting task making carving out any time for yourself within the busy life you all lead, it is important that you do this. Once you start looking after you, you will start to feel so much better. And, once you feel better, you will start to feel better in other areas of your life. This can range from work, relationships to parenting. If you feel better about yourself and this will radiate through. It can help with confidence and balancing stresses.
The purpose of self care, is not to spend a fortune or even to take yourself away from those other commitments you already have. It is about making some time to put you first. It doesn’t have to be a costly exercise or involve hours and hours of time. Sometimes, just making 5 minutes within your day to focus on you and something that makes you feel good will do the job. So, go and grab your favourite drink and sit down and enjoy it.
The key to successful self care is not to feel guilty for it. In the world currently, you find yourself going a million miles per hour. Self care involves you slowing down and just taking that opportunity to take in what is around you and consider what it is you individually need and how this can be implemented into your life on a regular basis.
My personal self care includes skincare, having a cheeky tipple after a long day or just tucking into the pot of herbal teas! I combine this with a good book and my favourite food, all after a long and luxurious bath. What does self care mean for you?
