What a beautiful place to go for brunch? Medicine is a lovely bakery, gallery and cafe and one I am so glad I now know about thanks to a lovely friend of mine. My friend Stacey invited my friend and I for brunch last year some time and mentioned a place called ‘Medicine’ which sounded very unique. I had no idea it was in the centre of brum, tucked away in one of the buildings on New street. What a treat! The atmosphere was lovely, refreshing and open; Full of plants, beautiful gallery artwork on the walls and lovely staff who were very helpful, cheerful and gave great service.
Food
So, the main reason you’re here; The delicious food that comes from the heart of Medicine bakery. Considering I had no idea it existed, my goodness it swept me off my feet. The menu is a great size and offers a nice amount of choice, including for vegans too. I was a little hesitant about my options just because they are different to most places I have dined in but was so glad with what I chose and cannot wait to visit again and try different options.
What I went for
So for my main choice I decided to go for the Aubergine & Cumin grilled sourdough sandwich. I am very picky when it comes to aubergine so I was taking a gamble. It has to be cooked just right and my goodness it was. It tasted so good and the textures of the aubergine, greens, caramelised onion and cashew cheese on the buttery charred sourdough was extraordinary. I find myself craving this sandwich which clearly means they hit the right note with my taste buds.
To accompany my sandwich and to try some more vegan options to review, I went for the ‘fried cauliflower wings’ and the ‘watermelon salad’. Both were honestly delicious. The watermelon salad sounds like such a bizarre thing from anything else I’ve had but oh my, it was lovely and refreshing with the cucumber noodles and drizzle. The cauliflower wings were coated in a gorgeous spicy sauce and had a beautiful crunch, bringing great texture and flavours which were nicely cooled by the watermelon. My mouth is watering as I write this!
To wash the delicious food I went for a soya chai latte and a berry soda (If I remember rightly). Both were lovely and made me feel very fancy. There is something about drinking a hot drink out of a glass. I know, I’m strange. After my food I had a turmeric latte which was interesting. I’ve always wanted to try one and it was nice but not something I’d keep ordering. It was a little grainy and earthy which was expected but still made me feel happy and fulfilled.
Bakery
As it says in the name, Medicine bakery offers freshly baked goods for you to take away as you leave the cafe and it is so rustic and lovely. It gives off a market vibe and makes you just want to grab a basket of freshly baked goodies and ride off on your bicycle on a crisp sunny day. They do indeed have vegan options too which is lovely but I didn’t snatch any up this time. I cannot wait to grab some to try next time though!
Overall, this cafe is a breath of fresh air. It’s light, open, full of plants, staff filled with zest and happiness and food that makes you wants to come back time and time again. Breakfast, lunch and tea I say! If I worked in Birmingham City Centre, it would be dangerous.
I hope this review has been helpful. Thanks so much for reading.
Stay wonderful!
