T’is the season to be full up…Fa la la la la, la la la la…
So, being vegan these days is wonderful with all of the new products coming out and companies becoming more and more adventurous as the seasons go by with their vegan ranges. Speaking of which, I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the new vegan options Greggs bakery are coming out with. First we were granted the plain Jane, classic sausage roll which was a nice start, but not everyones taste. It was just so great to have a warm fast food, budget friendly option during a day out. Then came along the vegan steak bake which I loved; The ‘meat’ a little mushy but tasty, rich and flavorable. The last one we were given was the cold vegan ham and cheese baguette which was good and the cheese, bean and sausage melt which in my opinion was to die for. It was like a warm hug on a cold day but then it left stores quicker than I could have imagined, making room for the festivities to begin!
Festive vegan bake
The vegan festive bake has been bought upon us by the Santa this year at the end of November if I remember correctly but I’ve only just had chance to try it. It’s basically a vegan Christmas din dins mixed together and wrapped in flaky pastry. I mean, does that not just sound like a dream? Unless you’re really not into a traditional Christmas dinner.
So I personally think it tastes really good. It’s got a lovely mix of flavours and reminds me of the chicken bakes, texture wise. Very creamy and rich but unlike others, not too sickly. It left me wanting another one.. Naughty.
From what I recall it is filled with a vegan turkey (Soya possibly?), stuffing, cranberry and a creamy white sauce. The stuffing is quite a dominant flavour and can leave that sage-y aftertaste but overall I think it’s really tasty and yes, very festive.
Sweet stuff
So now, the sweet stuff. Sadly alike the vegan savoury options, there aren’t a huge range at the same time, but now it’s festive season there are two options. One is the delicious iced ring donut which is a classic really and has been in stores for a long time, waaaay before the vegan festive range. A simple, sweet but not too sweet treat. You definitely get your fingers in a mess afterwards, but that’s part of the experience; Licking the left over icing off your fingers.
Then we come to the possibly acquired taste, mince pies. That’s right, vegan mince pies that truly are a ‘little gift of joy’ if mince pies are your thing. Personally I wouldn’t have usually gone for a mince pie as it’s not something I have really longed for, however I wanted to have the experience and try them so I could report back here. Turns out, they’re actually really tasty and have a lovely texture and rich filling without being too sickly sweet or tart.
So, I quite enjoyed trying the vegan goodies at Greggs this year and I won’t lie, I may have had two vegan bakes already, and see scope for another before Christmas. Have you tried any of the vegan options at Greggs? If so, let me know what you think in the comments
Thank you so much for reading. I hope you have enjoyed this little Greggs vegan option review.
